Further expansion continued in 2025 and 2026, with additional cart storage bays constructed to accommodate both hire carts and the increasing number of member-owned carts.
Throughout its history, the club has been shaped by hardworking volunteers, dedicated committee members, talented golfers and generations of local families.
Today, the club continues to thrive as an important sporting and social hub for the Home Hill community, carrying forward the vision and spirit of its founding members.
Over the past decade, Home Hill Golf Club has continued to invest in upgrading its facilities and enhancing the experience for both members and visitors.
In 2017, the club responded to growing demand by constructing a large cart shed to house members’ motorised carts. The project was made possible through the strong support of members, many of whom pre-paid their cart bays for five or ten years.
A new patio area was added to the rear of the clubhouse in 2019 and has since become one of the club’s most popular and well-used social spaces.
In 2023, the clubhouse was fully air-conditioned thanks to funding received through a Bendigo Bank Community Grant. The following year, solar panels were installed to help reduce ongoing electricity costs and improve sustainability.
In the early years, members faced rugged playing conditions, including narrow fairways, long guinea grass and even roaming cattle. The first clubhouse was a simple bush shed where golfers gathered after play. Over time, the club grew in both membership and facilities, with larger clubhouses built in 1953 and again in 1965.
A major setback occurred in April 1989 when Cyclone Aivu destroyed the clubhouse. Through the dedication of members, community support, insurance assistance and fundraising, the clubhouse was rebuilt and officially reopened later that same year.
The course itself has evolved significantly over the decades. Sand greens gradually gave way to grass greens in the 1970s, irrigation systems were installed, and continual improvements transformed the course into one of North Queensland’s most respected country golf facilities.
The history of Home Hill Golf Club dates back to 1923, when golfer and tailor Tom (T.A.) Villiers moved to Home Hill with the vision of establishing a local golf club. That dream became reality on 1 September 1932, when the inaugural meeting of the club was held at the Central Theatre in 8th Avenue. Villiers became the club’s founding president, supported by a passionate group of local members and volunteers.
The original course was developed on leased land near Swansborough’s property, with professional golfer George Mills from Townsville designing the layout. Armed with axes and mattocks, volunteers cleared the land and completed the first hole by October 1932. By March 1933, the club had established nine sand greens and officially opened the links on 2 July 1933.
